My Homemade Solar Power System:

Budget Solar Power System that Works:
A Bet With My Best Friend Turned Me into A Solar Panel Fanatic!!!

"Homemade Solar Power System Will Not Work" -- really?

IT WILL NOT WORK!!!” I bet with my best friend Harvey when he told me again the concept of Homemade Solar Energy System with much excitement. For months he had been talking about how easy it is to set up Homemade Solar Panels, and how cost effective it is. I was totally skeptical and would not accept his claims, although he showed me articles and testimonials that he found online.

I even bet that I would clean up his house for four weekends if he could prove his claims. However...

1 week later - Harvey showed me the “DIY Solar Kit” that he found online, and he said with this kit, he had taken the guesswork and mystery out.
2 weeks later - he showed me the materials and tools he got for himself.
4 weeks later - he showed me the Solar Panels he built.
8 weeks later - he showed me his electricity bill...

... and I obediently reported at his house to do his housework for the next 4 weekends.

And My Friend's "Trick" was?

Well, the fact is I wasn’t willing to admit defeat, and I was sure Harvey had used some tricks to win the bet. But one afternoon, after he explained to me the amount of effort he took to build the system and demonstrated how his system works, I was awed.

When he told me all it took was less than $200 to build his system, and he built it within 2 weeks, I was sold.

I decided to purchase an online DIY Solar Energy System and try it out myself. I started with Harvey’s recommendation of GreenDIYEnergy, and then further explored a few more that he had tried.

And I was hooked! Building solar panels is so much fun. I would spend hours and hours talking with Harvey about the latest news I gathered, and new things that I have tried. Furthermore, the sense of achievement being able to build something with my hands and it actually works is undescribable.

After gaining some experience, I joined Harvey in sharing about our projects with friends around us. Soon after that I participated in online discussions, and at the end, I decided to join effort with him to set up a website (this one!) to share our knowledge on Homemade Solar Energy System. We want more people to join us!

When I started my own project, I completed my research within a week, thanks to Harvey sharing with me his research on online products before he built his system. It helped a lot in saving me time and money. I always appreciate recommendations, and my friends would too. That’s why Harvey and I want to share with you our evaluation of a few online products, so that you can get the best one with confidence.

How do we know what are good programs to follow?

Simple. Here are our evaluation criteria:

The system can be built on budget We don't need to be techie to build it
We can build the system within weeks It's realistic & easy to follow
Money Back Guarantee is in place Responsive after-sale support

We adhered strictly to our selection criteria. After reviewing every DIY Homemade Solar Power kits we could find, it was pretty clear that there are only two that made the cut for us to recommend. The rest? We suggest that you don’t waste your time on them.

As of March 2010, we can tell you the BEST homemade solar kits available are:
#1 Green DIY Energy
#2 Homemade Energy Kit

#1 Pick: Green DIY Energy
"Anyone can follow these directions."

This is fabulous! Anyone can follow these directions, and most people have the materials at hands. Thanks so much, this will help a lot of people who could not otherwise afford solar energy.

More and more people are interested in building their own homemade solar panels, but most people are not doing anything yet, because of several obstacles. Take a look at how Green DIY Energy addresses them:

obstacle OBSTACLE #1: "Setting up solar panels seems so difficult. I need to have technical knowledge to do that”
We thought so too, but that is WRONG! Non-technical people like us can certainly make our solar panel project works too – all we need are some simple guidance. Green DIY Energy strips off the requirement for technical knowledge by providing clear and concise (we promise you that you will only find what you need, nothing burdening!) instructions and step-by-step video clips to guide you through the project. We can say it is the most comprehensible program on this topic you will ever find!

obstacle OBSTACLE #2: “I don’t know what tools and materials I need.  I don’t know where to get them.”
The author of Green DIY Energy understands this well. Right in the Introduction, he listed out all the materials you need. What we think are helpful are the estimated prices of the materials and where we could source them from. And then in the ‘Sourcing your materials’ section, there are tips on how to choose the most suitable materials and how to cut costs. Tools needed are listed separately, on Page 15. Any other reason you still don’t know how to get the tools and materials you need?

obstacle OBSTACLE #3: “Setting up solar panels will cost me a lot."
NOT TRUE! Green DIY Energy author listed out the estimated cost (minus labor cost – which actually is free because you will be doing the work) to build solar panels. It adds up to be – ONLY $98!

obstacle OBSTACLE #4: “It will take me a long time to set it up"
If you follow the instructions, all you need is a few weekends to get the work done. Building solar panels is not something as difficult as we have perceived. With proper guidance from Green DIY Energy, even a 12-year-old kid managed to build his own solar panels (don’t believe us? Take a look at the proof.)

obstacle OBSTACLE #5: “I don’t know who to get help from if I face problems.”"
Get help from the professionals! Green DIY Energy offers professional technical support. Ask them questions about your project, and professional advice will be given within 1-2 business days (actually within hours...).

In two e-books (merely 60 pages in total – it’s not heavy reading), Green DIY Energy demonstrates the complete steps to set up a homemade solar power system. The e-books are detailed enough to be what you need to build your solar panels, but to make the explanations even clearer, the author responsibly made six videos that show every step (really every step!) from tools and materials selection, to the procedures of assembling all the parts, to the final step of testing the system.

Green DIY Energy makes setting up solar panels looks so easy. We will say it is beyond any doubt that it is the best product of its kind we can find.

Again, let’s look at why Green DIY Energy is the best guidance you can find if you want to build your homemade solar panels:

Budget Solar Energy System that Works:
How to Build Your Solar Panels for Less Than $200, Within A Few Weekends!!!

Building a DIY Solar Power System to suplement the need of electricity at home is VERY achieveable. From the feedback of GreenDIYEnergy users, the system can be set up for under $200, and within a few weekends. Very cool! :-)

These are the steps to build your own Solar Power System. It is just a summary from GreenDIYEnergy. For complete instructions, download the program here:

Earth4Energy

First, understand the fundamental concepts on electricity. It doesn't mean you have to get an engineering degree from a college, but the bottomline is to understand the ideas of 'current', 'ampage', 'voltage', 'wattage', and 'watt-hour'. Well, you don't need to go really deep into this. All you need is a summary of these concepts to get you going.

The second step is to
calculate the size of the Solar Power System that you want to build. This is where the understandings of the above-mentioned concepts come into handy. You will need to determine the total amount of watt-hours/day that your house needs, define the peak power output in watt, and figure out the duty cycle for the system.

Sound like this is going to give you a big headache? No! I managed to compute these values by using the BONUS WORKSHEET provided by the GreenDIYEnergy program. All I needed to do was to substitute the values in the spreadsheet according to the need of my house, and that's it!

Thirdly, you will purchase the Solar Cells. The number of Solar Cells required is in accordance to the calculation you made in the previous step -- so it's good to make sure that your calculation was correct!

The fourth step is to assemble the Solar Cells into a panel to build the Solar Panel. Here is where technical advice might be needed (that's why I appreciate GreenDIYEnergy's technical support). You design the layout of your Solar Panel, hook up the Solar Cells, connect them correctly with tabbing ribbon, and position them in the panel with protective cover. Many beginners would hire technicians to do these for them -- that's fine. For me, I just want to DIY. Well, I know I can get help from GreenDIYEnergy anyway.

The next step is to install batteries. Choosing the right battereis itself is an expertise, as you have to make the cost vs. efficiency consideration. Furthermore, you have do perform calculation to make sure the battery size (capacity) is correct. After that, you will hook up the batteries to your system.

In between your Solar Power System and your batteries, you need to
hook up the Charge Controller. This is to protect your batteries from overcharging. At the output of the batteries, you will install the inverter. This device is used to convert the Direct Current (DC) output from your batteries to Alternating Current (AC), for the use of your house.

That's about all! But wait... Tonnes of things are still amiss!!!.

  1. What are the most common mistakes made by everyone? (It is crucial to know clearly about every step you take, because even little mistakes might bring you unnecessary trouble and cost you extra money.)
  2. Cost is always a concern. How can you get the most suitable materials in the lowest cost?
  3. How do you properly put everything together? (Hint: detailed plans help a lot)
  4. How do you test your system?
  5. If you find out something is wrong, how do you troubleshoot and fix it?

"I was so estatic when I saw your guide"

I was so ecstatic when I saw in your guide how easy it is to do this for yourself. Following your instructions and diagrams I was able to do this in about 6 hours and it would have cost me about $2000, if I was to purchase it. I say it's time well spent.

The ‘runner up’ guidance that we want to recommend is the Homemade Energy Solar DIY Kit. Well, to be honest, this program is somehow humble compared to the Green DIY Energy. However, it still stands out among other programs that we had come across. We can’t help reviewing it after being aware of its customer satisfaction rate. Their case studies reported up to an 80% of energy reduction in cost (evidence from their website)!

Different from Green DIY Energy, Homemade Energy advocates generating electricity for home use with both solar panels (they call it the “solar-based electricity”) and wind mill (“wind-based electricity”). Inside the program there are specific instructions that guide us on what is the best to build, based on the geographical location and the size of our house.

Similar to Green DIY Energy, Homemade Energy provides its instructions in both e-book and video format. What we really love is their monthly update! The Homemade Energy Team collects feedback their users, and along with their discoveries and latest information, publish them to the users. Users can pick up the latest copy from their site FREE. This makes our e-book never outdated!

Technical support is also available. However, there was user feedback that the response is not prompt – the support team will reply though, it’ll just take more time.

A summary of our review on Homemade Energy:

tick Covers both the solar-based and wind-based homemade electricity. It makes the project interesting because of how these two energy sources are combined
tick Detailed instructions are clearly presented in e-book
tick Instructional videos are provided to aid the explanation
tick BONUS: FREE monthly update! Program updated based on users’ feedback, author’s new discoveries and latest information in the homemade energy industry
tick 60-day Money Back Guarantee, with "No Question Ask" refund policy!
